International Studies – Political Science

Requirements for freshman and transfer students that entered UCSD Fall 2013 and later:

Language Requirement

International Studies majors are required to demonstrate basic proficiency in a modern foreign language.  This can be accomplished in one of the following ways:

International Studies Core Courses (3 courses)

All courses are 4-units, upper-division and must be taken for a letter grade of C- or better.

Disciplinary Focus (8 courses)

All eight (8) courses must be 4 units, upper-division and taken for a letter grade of C- or better.

Eight (8) upper-division courses must be selected from the following:

  • All courses numbered POLI 120 – 159:
    • Comparative Politics: POLI 120A – POLI 139A
    • International Relations: POLI 140A – POLI 159

A maximum of three (3) courses may be selected from the following subfields:

  • American Politics: POLI 100A – POLI 108
  • Political Theory: POLI 110A – POLI 119A
  • Policy Analysis: POLI 160AA – POLI 168
  • Research Methods: POLI 170A – POLI 181

Interdisciplinary Elective Courses (3 courses)

All three (3) courses must be upper-division, 4 units and taken for a letter grade of C- or better.

Course Pre-requisites: Students are responsible for meeting all departmental pre-requisite courses. Please refer to the General Catalog for additional information.

Regional Requirement

At least three (3) of the eleven (11) Disciplinary Focus and Interdisciplinary Elective courses must focus on one region.

  • Note: This requirement is an overlap requirement comprised of courses that count for both the Disciplinary Focus or Interdisciplinary Elective courses and the Regional Requirement.
  • Regional Requirement courses may come all from within the Disciplinary Focus, Interdisciplinary Electives, or a combination of the two.
  • Possible regions include: Africa, East Asia, Europe, Latin America or the Middle East.

Secondary Track (5 courses)

All five (5) courses must be upper-division, 4 units, non-language and taken for a letter grade of C- or better.

Complete five (5) courses from ONE track selection. 

Note: A secondary track CANNOT be the same as the primary track.

How to change to the new International Studies major requirements

Instructions

Students entering UCSD prior to Fall 2013 are allowed to either follow the old major requirements or switch to the new 2013 major requirements.

To change to the new 2013 requirements:

  1. Review the new major requirements.
  2. Request to be switched to the new 2013 major requirements.
    1. Log-on to the Virtual Advising Center (http://vac.ucsd.edu)
    2. Select "Ask a Question" from the toolbar across the top of the screen.
    3. Select the button to ask "Your International Studies Academic Advisor (for my MAJOR)"
    4. Message should read:
      • Dear International Studies Advisors, I would like to change my International Studies curriculum to the new 2013 requirements.  Thank you, Your name"
  3. Once you have made the request, we will update your catalog and your degree audit will reflect your new requirements.

Double Majors: If you are a double major interested in switching to the new ISP major requirements, you must submit an updated double major petition to your college with approval from both major departments.  Please make an appointment by emailing isp@ucsd.edu or call (858)822-5299 to revise your double major petition to reflect the new requirements.
